Also, plenty of repairs and adjustments can be made without removing the box, and useful information is available on Tom Townsend's "Saabmaster" website.
You do take quite a hit in fuel consumption, particularly around town - on the open road the transmission locks up in top gear for better economy, though the overall gearing is lower. Top speed remains the same and even if acceleration is slower on paper, in real life I doubt there is any difference.
If buying one, quite apart from obvious malfunctions, the fluid condition is very important - if you encounter burned black sludge, start running.
The ECU on automatic full-pressure turbo cars is re-mapped to reduce maximum torque and although lots of people tune these engines without problem it's a risk I'm no longer prepared to take, personally.
