to relate their personal experiences?
I do. and my 1992 9000CDT auto... has 310k miles on it. it did have 2 replacements in it, one about 20k miles after I purchased it, a known manufacturing issue, replaced under warranty. the other at about 120K miles, loose nut behind the wheel (that would be ME) shifted from reverse to drive without fulling stopping and a nasty mechanical noise felt and heard. chage the fluid, get it adjusted, and try to not do too many forced kick downs as you stomp on it at 75 to chase that BMW that just went bye...
I have three of them. Yes, there is a know issue and a know fix too, but generally the ZF transmission works fine as long as you change the fluid and keep it topped off.
I also have a couple of 9000 Aero 5 speeds and the 94 had a transmission fail at 110K miles, and put a used one in and it's been ok, my 96 is good, and yet a hopped up 94 (stage 5 done by Frank and company) is having 5 speed issues.
These are *my* personal experiences, and at this point... the autobox has more miles on it and less issues... oh, and I take it to well over 100MPH, just because I can... :)
But in General, I'd say that both the Auto and the Manual are equally ok as long as you take care of them. Just like the 9-5 engine sludge is not a problem unless you abuse the oil change interval. Saabs are sometimes particular in that you can't do 3x the miles between fluid changes that you are supposed to do.... some brands will let you get away with that, and some Saabs will, but not all of them.
