You don't say how many miles, or if you have ever had a complete overhaul.
I have taken a couple Saab alternators to a local auto electric rebuilder. One was operational, had like 160k miles, all original and never replaced VR as far as I know. The other had eaten bearings at like 230k, I had previously replaced VR at around 200k.
I was told that the slip rings on the working unit were too far grooved, or worn, or something like that, basically unusable.
So I had to wait a week whilst he sourced a few cores, because he also had no rebuildable (read:usable) cores.
He is competitely priced (less than $200 for the newer, internal fan alternator on a '97, about 150 or so for the older, external fan model.) but more importantly will do good quality work. Isn't that what really matters with an alt or a starter when you are 5 or 50 or 500 miles from home?
I have heard from not just a few people that the "chain store" electrics have a good chance of being just paint-overs! Happened to my brother with his ('06 Volvo??)
So, my guess is that they might be correct, the brushes will eventually get shorter and shorter life (think pads on grooved, thin brake rotors)
Don't forget that the bearings have a limited life as well. You'll want new ones before they burn out with a flash of glory!!
