1990 was the 5th year of 9000 production. The 9000's had their share of problems, especially with the early years (heater cores, DI cassettes, fuel pumps, TCS, etc) .
The 5th year 9-5 (04) had most of the problems you talk about solved, and the LPT 9000's also suffered from early turbo failure, more the brand of the turbo.
My 04 9-5 has been a very low maintenance car compared with any of the 9000's I've owned, just as the 9000's were lower maintenance than the 900's I've owned.
This is just like the 900 vs 9000 debate you see on the classic 900 board.
I too think that the original design was the best looking, but a 90 CD isn't the original design (modified both front and rear) and to me is the worst looking of the series.
Mechanically, the 86-88 9000's were the worst years and the 96-98 9000's were by far the best of the series, just as the 07-09 will probably be the best of the 9-5's.
