From a Saab service bulletin reproduced on the townsendimports site:
"1. Move the shift lever to Position 1.
2. Push the manual selector valve all the way into the valve body.
3. Lower the valve body into position, wiggle the shift linkage slightly to engage the manual selector valve."
then continue with reassembly.
Don't worry, you haven't hurt anything if you didn't do this, just open it up and reassemble it this way.
The quasi site doesn't have this, almost nothing on there about the automatic trannys.
Or if neither the above nor senor Don's way is appealing, call Eriksson Industries and I'll bet they'd talk you through it.
