You must be a former 99 owner. Because the engine and transmission are transverse in a 9000, there is no hypoid differential gear to transfer power at a right angle from the driveshaft to the axles. Because of the sliding action of the hypoid pinion on the ring gear, EP-type (Extreme Pressure) gear oil is required to manage the extra friction on the gear set. The manual transmission in a 9000 was originally designed to only need engine oil for all lubrication, and the automatic only needs ATF.
I never had an automatic 99 or 900, but I know that the automatic in the 99's definately had a separate compartment for the differential with gear oil in it.
