I recently bought a new Thunderbolt and the car mount to go with it. The kit came with one of the typical windshield-mounts with big suction cup, but also included a flat plastic disk with strong adhesive backing, designed as a receiving surface for the suction cup mount. I stuck this disk right on my dash top, above the clock and maybe an inch or two from the edge. It makes the phone easy to reach (just to the right of the steering wheel) and puts it at a good line-of-sight (but doesn't block the view like having it on the windshield does).
I could probably post a picture if you were interested.
