Ok, so my '94 9000 Aero has a dead 5spd manual transmission.
When jacked up, no matter what gear is selected, both front wheels can be turned freely of one another. When on the ground, if I have a gear selected - any gear - all I get is a grinding noise from the engine compartment, no moving. I do feel like I get positive selection on all gears, and the grinding seems to correlate in pitch to the gear I've selected - so it seems to me that the problem is somewhere on the output side of things.
Now here's the rub; I want to do this on the cheap as much as possible, so I know I'm already in for pulling the trans myself. My dilemma comes down to finding a replacement.
Option A : There's a used unit at a local yard that will cost me $550 - 140k miles on that, but unknown how hard it's been pushed.
Option B : I already know I can spend over $2000 with shipping to have Eriksson rebuild mine. Not cheap, but I'll know what I'm getting.
Option C : Take it apart and attempt to order just the broken parts. My hunch is that there will be some hidden costs here when it comes to tools and having to replace additional parts that I damage in the process. Obviously this would be the most work, and I'd be a little suspect of my own abilities, making this rank somewhere behind option A in terms of reliability.
Option D : Source a transmission from a different car ( NG900, OG 9-3 or 9-5 perhaps)? and change a few of the ancillary bits like the clutch slave, selector rod, and end cap to fit the 9000. Does anyone know if the internals are all that different on later Saab manual Trans? Are they any sturdier?
Opinions, experiences? Who out there has rebuilt, or had rebuilt the manual gearbox on their 9k?
Cheers,
Ben
