I just had mine do that and put it back together. I purchased another, but it seems A.O.K.
What holds it together internally, is a small eccentric ring clip at the end of the internal piston shaft.
Deform that clip a bit more with a pair of pliers, re-install it, and the next time you assemble the piston it will never come apart again.
The problem at that point is finding a suitably light oil to reassemble the shock with, and bleeding it. I used a vice that wasn't attached to a table, to compress it during bleeding.
