IMHO they do need to be worked on during a rebuild.
I've had the e-brakes on at least two reman calipers fail, and others here have had the same experience. They just stick so the e-brake won't release. I have not done a reman myself on these, but will probably do it next time (have two 9Ks).
I don't think they need more than a good cleaning and maybe some lubrication, but they DO need to be worked on in a reman job.
