Looking for confirmation, or at least opinions, here.
My new-to-me '96 CS, 161,000 miles. Has been fine.
But today, all short drives around town but not stop and go, all clear driving, noticed the fan was running after I parked the car. Then the next drive my eye fell on the temp gauge and it was up at the top in the H range.
Has before this stayed about 1/4 of way up gauge.
Plenty of coolant, and no boiling over yet. The electric radiator fan comes on and runs fine, and in about 5 minutes car is back to normal. But it heats right up again - - from a cold engine to H in about 5 minutes of driving, from cooled down but still warm to H even faster.
Oh, and this is in Maine, in 50s to 60s today. It has been working fine, even in the brief spurts of 70s plus weather we have had.
My only other hope is that it could be a failed thermostat, but the big hose from thermostat to radiator seems plenty hot and the fan is coming on and cooling what's in the radiator and that brings temp down.
So I guess it's, hot exhaust gas is getting straight into the coolant heating it beyond capacity of radiator to cool it down.
I have to say, when I bought it I ran it from cold for about a minute, shut it off and opened the coolant reservoir cap, and heard a hiss. I told the prior owner, sounds like you've got a head gasket going.
When I bought the car the wastegate rod was off. I put it on with a new clip and I have to confess I've been enjoying the turbo boost maybe a little too often. (Why don't I like to be behind other cars?) Now I'm wondering if that clip was pulled on purpose to try to conserve a failing head gasket.
This is going to put a serious crimp in my mobility till I can get the gasket from Eeuro. I kind of expected more warning and a longer still-drivable period of gradual decline so I could plan the job better.
