Diagnose a blown HG
Can you remember running the car really hot or having the temperature warning light come on? Did you ever have to "limp" the car home after it got super hot? When was the last time you flushed your coolant? What did it look like? Does your coolant overflow tank look like there's a milkshake inside? Blown headgasket symptoms are a severe loss of power, oil and water mixing in the engine and a noticeable milkshake sludge everywhere, usually follows an incident where you ran the car without water or after your water pump failed and you kept driving. A lot of white smoke coming out the back is a key symptom. No burning oil smell.


Diagnose a blown turbo
Does it smoke on deceleration? Are there tiny oil spots all over the rear bumper or around the tail pipe? Is the tail pipe wet and oily? Do you have more than 150K on your turbo? When was the last time you replaced it?

It's possible to do the turbo in a weekend if you study the DIY's and buy your parts in advance from a reputable supplier. If this is your daily driver, that puts a lot of pressure on you for a job that already isn't very fun.


At the very least I'd have a Saab tech take a quick look at it. It's not like they're going to charge you to tell you within 2Mins that your turbo is shot.
