The little Allen screw and fine gear set inside is barely strong enough to be backed out by just turning the screw. I always counterpush with a prybar on the piston while turning the screw just to not strip the gears inside.
Sometimes if the gearset is crunched, you need to screw the bolt out again while at the same time counterhold slightly on the piston and you can feel when the gearset cogs over ones or twice and gets into proper location again and after that you can back the piston out just about flush.
3/8" you say, that might be all it is though.
To test, take a new rotor and new pads and if they all fit, you have backed it out enough.
