brake caliper - no spring ok?

97 9000CS,
I installed the Ferodo pads in the front calipers, after some grinding of the pads' backing plates. My question is.....when removing old pads I destroyed one of the caliper springs which attaches to the outer side of the caliper. Now I am running without it. Is this a problem? Can I wait another 30k miles before I will replace caliper? Fyi, not feeling much difference yet in braking from OEM pad performance.
Fyi, the 14 year old calipers are rough (car lives outside in the snowbelt) but pistons retracted smoothly. One piston is missing 25% of of cyl due to rust and prob should be replaced asap.
Thanks
Dana Hill
