front brakes on rear - thought experiment

I'm wondering about the feasibility of replacing the rear brake assembly with the front. Could anyone provide input on the impact this might have on the master cylinder and hydraulic system? Handling under heavy braking? Is it even possible to replace the rear assembly with the front? I haven't inspected the mounting points yet, but maybe the rear calipers have the same bolt spacing as the fronts?
E-brake would be lost, yes, but an alternative may involve fabricating a hydraulic e-brake system which I've been mulling over recently, possibly by using a clutch master attached to the e-brake lever, running hydraulic line through the e-brake cable area and splicing into the rear circuit with a check valve.
