Charging Issue....Alternator or Voltage Reg.....

I've had a couple of no starts over the last couple of months, and when I stopped at Autozone, they told me the battery tested ok, but undercharged. My dashboard is telling me that I'm sending 12.5- 12.9/13 volts, depending on revs and whats on.......My mechanic thinks I should replace the alternator, and that the 34 month old battery ( rated at 750 amps) is producing about 560.....Could it be the alternator is ok, but the VR, is under charging ? how can I test that? A remanuf Bosch alternator is $ 210.00, but that doesn't include a new VR, either.
