Rob T,
Having successfully performed powertrain transplants five times, allow the voice of experience to offer the following suggestions:
1. Disconnect the top engine bracket from the passenger strut tower and flip it forward. Use narrow needle nose pliers to prevent the spacers from falling as the through bolts are removed.
2. Instead of removing the alternator and P/S bracket from the back of the engine, detach the P/S pump from the bracket and pry it free.
3. Use a flat, un-angled 13mm or 1/2 inch ratcheting wrench on the downpipe nuts AND on the A/C compressor mounting bolts, thus avoiding evacuating the refrigerant. (But first, loosen the botttom oil cooler attachment screws and lift it out of the way.)
4. It is easier to remove the engine and trans as a unit than to leave the tranny in situ, especially when reinstalling. Simply detach the steering knuckle bolts, detach the inner boot clamp and pull the axles from the inner drivers. Far more efficient to work unobstructed. Yes, use an engine crane.
5. Disconnect the engine harness at the large black ECU and ABS connectors. Detach the front of the false bulkhead and drape the engine harness over the DI cassette.
Happy SAABing
