hesitation, stumgling - the saga continues

Well, it wasn't the crank position sensor. So far, I've replaced the CPS, plugs (gapped at 1 mm), the turbo, the fuel pressure regulator, and throttle position sensor. The DI has about 70K miles on it. AMM is original.

To recap: '91 9000 turbo manual. Symptoms are pronounced hesitation and stumbling, to the point that the car will not accelerate any further, at moderate power and higher power settings, once above about 3000 rpm. Most noticeable accelerating in 5th on the highway. When the stumbling starts, if I add more power, it becomes worse, and the car will buck, as if missing, and the tach needle will oscillate wildly. No check engine light.

Interesting, I can accelerate in 1st without the problem. Sometimes it happens in 2nd, often in 3rd and 4th, and always in 5th. Never happens below about 2500 rpm. Yesterday it happened in 2nd while climbing a hill, but I floored it, and the symptom stopped and the car accelerated hard. So it doesn't seem to be a fuel deprivation issue. Note that if it happens in 5th gear on the highway, I can't accelerate through it with full power. It just keeps stumbling.

One other strange thing: When the stumbling is occurring, if I back off on the gas quickly and then right back on it, the stumbling stops for a few seconds.

Put on your thinking caps, my friends. The dealer is stumped - told me it was the CPS. Fortunately I didn't spend much on the CPS as I got one I could splice in. Thanks in advance.
