I've developed all kinds of workarounds that let me fly solo. Once in a great while I'll have my wife or whoever is nearby do something, but that's really rare. I don't do big stuff like engines or trannies so a third and fourth hand aren't needed. A lot of being able to work solo is thinking it through ahead of time and not rushing. And most ordinary auto repair jobs really only have room for one person.
Having good tools and knowing how to use them is also important. So is knowing your limits.
Safety is really only an issue if you're under the car. Otherwise I just wear safety glasses, gloves and think before I do stuff.
Anders (aka SWEDECAR) who posts here is a pro tech in Torrance, CA and he works solo. I think he may call on the guys in the shop next door for help when he needs it, but most things you really can do alone.
