7trout,
Let's assume you have verified the integrity of inner and outer cv joints by lifting the front wheels and watching the other wheel rotate in the opposite direction of the one you are spinning by hand.
The noises you experienced may have been from the parking pawl might not fully engaging.
Disconnect the shift cable clip fom the transmission.
Slacken the cable adjustment nuts at the trans support.
Pull the cable end bracket to it's highest position, (counterclockwise). This should engage the parking pawl in park and thereby prevent the car from rolling.
If the car rolls, remove the trans top pan.
Pry up the two metal tubes and remove them. Their o-rings should be placed back on the metal tubes prior to refitting.
Remove the valve body.
The external shaft cable bracket rotates on a horizontal shaft whose internal end has a quarter circle toothed gear. It's teeth mesh with a similar set on the top of the horizontal shaft that controls then transmission shift valve.
Lift up vertical shaft and ensure the gear teeth mate their entire length.
Tilt the forward most part of the valve body downward when refitting to ensure it properly mates with the transmission.
Ensure the metal tube o-rings are on them before refitting.
Clean the pan gasket and mounting surfaces before refitting the pan.
Place the shuftr in P before reattaching the shift cable end clip.
Adjust the shift cable nuts to match the shifter selections and retest.
Happy SAABing
