As far as tamper resistance and removal/refitting, the only problem you can run into is if you let it retract all the way it won't come out again. Having taken one apart, I can say it's fairly easy to remedy even that, and it looks far more like that "feature" is a byproduct of the design of the mechanism rather than an intentional anti-tamper mechanism. Having said that, I certainly wouldn't try fixing anything in one that wasn't working properly, getting a used one is a much better idea. Just wrap a piece of duct tape around the belt near the top to keep it from retracting before you disconnect it from the car.
