You'll need a 3/4" drive socket, and a good breaker bar, and a piece of 1 1/2" pipe to slip over it and stand on to get lots of torque (A 150 pound man at 1.5 feet = 225 foot lbs. of torque, about the correct amount. Stand closer if you weigh more, further out if you weigh less.
Whatever the books all say, you can re-use those nuts multiple times, I can't imagine how yours happened to be loose, probably bearing began to come apart which made play? Or someone just put it on loose.
They have a place on the outer edge where they can be staked into a groove on the axle, as I recall. That unstakes itself when you take them off, and almost never does the same spot land over the staking groove when you retighten them, so you can stake it again. Tighten a scooch more if the prior staked place is right over the notch.
