Tom, you probably had off the strike latch part on the outside of the door - - two big T-45?? can't remember size screws. Anyways:
If you removed that, on reinstalling it, the outer door latch part needs to be clicked to, as if closed, when you mate it up to the door and interior latch mech.
There are two pegs that come out of that plate. The smaller enters an arc-shaped notch in the door skin, and inside, is meant to enter a slot in an arc-shaped nylon arm that, as the latch tongue moves from latched to unlatched, moves as well, swinging a magnet on its end past a blue reed switch that's mounted on the interior latch mechanism.
If you put the outer plate back on in the unlatched position, that skinny peg falls down at the bottom end of the arc, outside the slot in the nylon arm it's meant to mate with.
When the outer plate is in latched position, the peg is at the TOP of its travel, and looking in thru the sheet metal arc-shaped notch, you can see the nylon part it is meant to enter into, and it will just fit in.
Just remember, when it is all bolted up tight, to unlatch the door, either with outer or inner handle, before slamming it shut the first time.
I'm not clear on just what work you did on your door but kind of assume my solution fits your facts.
If otherwise, then maybe it's in the wiring to that blue reed switch?
