YMMV - "Your mileage may vary" Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 4 Mar 2012 08:56:13 In Reply to: Life of poly butterfly bushes >, Bill Davies, Sun, 4 Mar 2012 08:28:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Mine lasted a similar amount of time before I replaced them - this time with regular Bilstein rubber bushings. The problem that I found with the poly bushings is that the rotational movement causes friction/wear between the steel tube and the poly bushing material; the grease disappears and then it just wears out the material. This gets magnified if the steel tube oxidizes and develops a rough surface. In the stock rubber bushing, the steel tube is bonded to the rubber and the rubber flexes, as opposed to wearing away.
An extreme example of this is in my rear swaybar bushing: I replaced with a second set of poly about 14 months ago, and one side is quite worn already (rattling around over EVERY bump) as the normal steel rear swaybar rusts up quickly, acts as a file against the material. I may have to clean and paint the wear surfaces if I want to continue using poly back there.
