Why replace NTC coolant temp sensor? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 10:43:33 In Reply to: NTC coolant temp sensor, Ken Fisher, Wed, 11 Apr 2012 16:34:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Still hunting for a final fix. I removed and cleaned out the IAC valve, which wasn't particularly dirty, and the pulsating fast idle issue has partially gone away. However, there is still a time during the warm-up process when things are a bit off: after driving about 4 - 6 blocks, the temp indicator gauge moves up to about 8:00 (yes, fed by a different sensor) and the car will temporarily exhibit the pulsating fast idle from about 1400 to 1800 RPM when waiting at a stop. Once warmed up, the car idles fine at 850 RPM.
I'm wondering why you recommended changing the NTC coolant sensor, which are now about $32. OK, the sensor in this 1994 car is probably 18.5 years old and has traveled almost 200,000 miles, but I'm not getting a "check engine" light - do they fail by being slow to respond? A disparity between the actual engine temperature and the temp as seen by the ECU through the sensor might explain something during the warm-up process.
