My manual also says "do not use synthetic oil". I use it anyway. So do many others who have posted on this board. It's a calculated risk.
If you buy Dexron III, you're buying fluid that is no longer licensed by GM. It's a calculated risk that the manufacturer's product fully meets GM's requirements for Dexron III.
Dexron VI is supposed to be compatible, but it is at least a synthetic blend, if not fully synthetic. GM says it is backward compatible, but will GM replace your transmission if you have a problem? Dexron VI is a calculated risk.
Neither GM nor ZF will bother to test old transmissions with modern fluids and tell us what is compatible. Ultimately these are our car and our transmissions. If the transmission breaks we own the problem. We have to take a calculated risk with ATF.
Take whichever risk suits you. Refresh your ATF every 15,000 miles or so regardless of what you use. Avoid hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear, especially if you've converted your CS to fpt. Then relax because the automatic in late model 9000s is fairly robust.
