And if you want to give up on what the pump won't draw out of the tank it can be a very clean job with minimum gas splash on you. But it's gallons, two or three I think.
If you pull the pump, I just remembered, I bailed with an empty tin can that I flattened into an oval shape so I could drag the flattish side along the bottom of the tank and get more till switching over to the clean rag for final bit.
I got the toothed ring out intact by tap-tapping here, tap-tapping there, lightly, all around, till it started moving. Use a blunt tool, a big screwdriver wants to work as a chisel and take the tangs off the ring.
Funny how much there is in the tank that the pump flat will not pull. I guess it's kind of a trash reserve, for any water and dirt that gets into the tank to collect in, and meant to hold more than will likely ever get in over the life of the car.
Any gas you bail out as above, put into say a gallon plastic milk jug, then you can see any dirt or water down at the bottom and avoid that when pouring the gas out to use. I found none in the '96 I junked last fall.
