Not the greatest failure to deal with, but a blown head gasket ain't terrible. A friend's blew in his 99 9-3. Replace all gaskets, get the head machined, and flush the coolant system. You can drop the oil pan as well and clean out all the contaminated oil with degreaser. Did this on the 9-3 and it worked beautifully. Just make sure everything is evaporated before reinstalling the pan.

Fill er up with oil and a new filter, run it gently for 100 miles (I think that's right. Anybody with a different figure?), then do another oil change. This will flush the oiling system.

Make sure you torque the head bolts with an accurate wrench, in the correct sequence. And don't forget the final 90-degree turn. use zip ties to hold the timing chain to the sprockets as soon as you pull the valve cover - this will prevent the chain from moving and throwing off your timing.

Figure on $150 for parts, and $75 to have the head resurfaced if it needs it. If you haven't done one before, figure on about 6 hours under the hood.
