Buy a can of starting fluid (one with a little red straw nozzle end). The next time you get into your car and it doesn't start, pop the hood, pull a vacuum line off the nipple over on the intake manifold, and give a shot of starting fluid straight into the intake through that nipple. If it fires, you have a fueling issue.
Also, its been my experience that while the 1994+ crank sensors DO go bad, they don't go bad as often as the 1993 and prior, which was a different style, and mounted behind the crank pulley. They would die when hot, and work once they cooled off, but not that many times. They'll generally hicchip a few times, then go flat dead. The newer style that inserts into the front of the block down by the bellhousing is a different style and isn't in the road grime. I've honestly never had one go bad on any 1994+ 9k I've owned.
Don't forget the importance of the ignition switch. There are many wires on the back of the ignition switch that are powered when you turn they key, and those switches are more prone to failure than the CPS. If your "ignition" wire isn't being powered when you turn the key, it will crank and crank, but never get a signal to fire.
If the car acts up when cold.....I'd try the $80 ignition switch before I tried the $125 crank sensor. If it NEVER acts up when cold, TRY the crank sensor.
That all of course is after you've done the starting fluid trick just to confirm you don't have a fuel feed issue (unlikely by the sounds of it, but you never know).
