Running around town yesterday in 93-95 degree ambient and sunny, the center temp was in the low 50's. This is not as good as other 9000's I've had, it should be about 5 - 10 degrees cooler. The A/C in this 97 has always been problematic, evaporator freezing up, bad expansion valve and just generally poor cooling. A calibration did not seem to help, recaled because we have trouble with it running cold in the winter and a cal fixes it. The outlet temp stays within a few degrees whether idling or running along at 45MPH+. Guessing the expansion valve is controlling evap temp at too high a temp, or the temp flap is not closing well or otherwise leaking.. Under lighter heat loads it will get cool enough (low 40's)to cycle the A/C clutch. Before the expansion valve change the evaporator would freeze up if the center vent temp got a degree or 2 below 40 degrees.
