You can slide it out and look at it. Check for dampness. If it looks good, it probably is good, well maybe good, or not.
I think the problem with the cores is not whether they were metal or plastic, but the design of the hoses going to them. Our engines move front to back, which pushes and pulls the cores. Years ago, I had an old GM front driver that had a big 'S' in the heat core hose, which allowed the hose to take up the engine movement before it got to the core.
