Age and heat do affect the seals. Only one seal typically is cracked in multiple places due to the high pressure and heat from driving in reverse. Main thing is to avoid applying throttle in reverse, it raises the already high reverse pressure. When the engine is at idle, the main pressure on the seal is 7.5 bar in drive, and 11.3 bar in reverse. At full throttle, 13 bar in drive and 18 in reverse. 1 bar = 14.5 PSI. As a result main pressure in reverse can readily exceed the normal pressures in forward.
The rubber seal that fails first is between main pressure and governor pressure. Governor pressure should be zero with the car stationary, and is IIRC 4.4+ bar in 4th gear. As a result the pressure across the governor seal is the difference between main pressure and governor pressure. High pressure across the seal = low vehicle speed and lots of throttle, especially in reverse, and low pressure across the seal = cruising at higher vehicle speed and low throttle.
