You're right, the rear O2 sensor is still good

I finally got the catalyst monitor to run. It was in "not run" mode since I replaced the battery 17 months ago (about 16,000 miles driven).

What did the trick was two recent trips when I deliberately kept the engine speed under 2500 rpm. That's all I did. The ACC system was on and the cruise control was engaged, which are usually no-nos when the goal is to make OBD2 monitors run. The first trip was about 50 boring interstate miles starting with a warm engine. The second trip was maybe 8 miles, part in town and part interstate, starting with a cold engine.

I'm not a lead foot, but it takes real effort to keep a 9K automatic below 2500 rpm at all times.
