Early 1994 Aero/manual/190k
Well, HG finally went, but luckily I've been paying attention to the tell tale signs and was somewhat ready. I knew enough to not drive it as it started to get hot, pulled over as soon as I could and had it towed home.
I almost feel like I made it happen as I just had the exhaust done and have been revving it higher than normal. But its just as well, I'm happy it happened before our new-england winter here in the boston area. I'm on the fence as many have been regarding DIY vs. paying an indy but definitely leaning towards DIY as I've another vehicle to use while the black beauty is down and out. I've found the SAAB to be fun to work on in that it was built with quality for the most part from the get go and with the proper tools it seems just as easy or even easier as other makes I've worked on. Its great so many things can be re-built/refreshed. I've never done a HG, but I have broken a few engines down, and once removed a B234 head. I'm not totally in the dark! ha plus our forum here and all the other resources, I'm hoping to be ok.
I've already re-torqued with Bars leak and I'm done with band-aid fixes. I've gathered as much info from our forum, quasi's site, and I have the haynes. I also have a buddy to jump in for the sticky parts, removing the head and squaring away the timing. I've searched for a definitive parts list and that is obviously tough because each job is case by case.
I do not have the previous owners maintenance records, and though well maintained, I honestly don't know about the tensioners. So, I'm on the fence about the chain tensioners out of fear and ignorance.
can I change both without adding significant labor?
I understand now is the time to do it, just wanted to clarify the latest knowledge on the topic, I believe my car has the newer sprockets so I planned on leaving that alone.
chain guides? do they add much to the job?
what I have so far:
-head gasket kit from e-euro (with exhaust and intake gaskets as well as valve seals and valve cover gaskets)
-new head bolts (I'm assuming the latest head bolt issue/design from e-euro is going to be good for my car as all will be replaced at the same time)
-82 degree thermostat & mercedes coolant + long awaited water pipe that rusted and is now patched with a rubber hose at the time using 82 degree
-New ARP exhaust studs (two of the originals are broken)
-turbo to manifold gasket
-new spark plugs/oil+filter
-all the fixins for rebuilding my water-pump, except for the connector tube thingy that goes to the block...hoping mine is okay. looking for a source on that...
Pending...
timing chain tensioner?
balance chain tensioner? (assuming there is one? don't know about that yet)
timing chain guides?
are there balance chain guides as well that are within reach?
if anyone can chime in, I've not ordered the pending stuff yet, but have no problem doing it.
thanks!
Mark
