I've had some pretty sketchy shifting on my '96 over the years. My indy would periodically tap the tapered pin in deeper but finally I just put in a new coupling. I could get into all the gears but it was very sloppy and needed some finessing.
Then when I had the clutch done a bit over a year ago the lower motor mounts and the tranny mount were also shot so had them done at the same time. The shift coupler had only been on there for 2 years at that point but had been stressed by the worn engine and tranny mounts. So I had that done, too. The car still shifts great, 11,000 miles later, at 194K miles.
I suggest you look at all the engine mounts (two lower, 2 upper), the tranny mount, and put in a new coupler. With the 200K on your car some of these are likely due for replacement and shifting is very reliant on all the parts being aligned correctly, which the mounts help make happen.
