VW/Audi has two different water pump configurations Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 21 Oct 2012 14:25:25 In Reply to: ouch!, Ken Fisher, Sun, 21 Oct 2012 11:20:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The water pumps on the 1.8L and 2.0L inline four cylinder engines are a "squirrel-cage" type of setup, and the factory plastic impellers did disintegrate, not helped by their G12 coolant which is similar to Dexcool - don't know if that's still the case. On these, a metal impeller pump from another manufacturer is not necessarily a bad idea.
The V6, and V8 (and possibly the V10!) engines come with a more normal appearing water pump, like a Chevy V8, but the factory originals have a plastic impeller. There have been many online complaints, including mine and the post linked below, about early failures of the metal-impeller replacement pumps. The picture illustrates how most people do a water pump/timing belt job, so you don't want to go in there twice.
