Mine did got bad on my '87. It would let out a horrific screech at start up, and was confirmed by the white line test. The good news is that it seemed to give plenty of warning before presumably going terminal.

It's been years since I've seen this mentioned on the board, so I might guess it is something reasonably common on the 2L cars but not for the 2.3L cars (though that is just a guess). It's an easy part to change especially if you're already doing the belt, but I would advice having either a good impact gun or suitable extensions and an a big pipe for your breaker bar as mine was on there tight. You'll also want a good 1/2" torque wrench to get it back on right as a lose one can damage the crank snout.
