Fuel pump replacement hints Posted by Nixter [Email] (#680) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nixter) on Thu, 8 Nov 2012 08:23:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Thanks all to responded to my dead car issue a few weeks back. Yes it was the fuel pump.
Some lessons learned.
- The pump itself is contained within a "mini-tank" on the whole pump assembly/sending unit. The actual pump motor is replaceable within the pump assembly itself but I was able to find a reasonably priced complete assembly at TheSaabSite for about $170. IMHO it's easier in the long run to replace the whole thing and avoid any possible "dead in the boonies" scenario
- I installed the new pump assembly into a fuel tank that was about 1/2 full. Pump ran but I had no fuel pressure. Looking at the old pump, there is a line that takes fuel that is not sent to the engine and circulates it back around to the intake area where I would guess venturi action draws fuel into the mini-tank canister surrounding the fuel pump. This is probably to keep the fuel pump fully immersed (and cooled) regardless of fuel level. Since the new pump was already installed, I pulled the return line fitting and added about 1/2 gallon of gas through a funnel... basically primed the pump. Now I had fuel flow and all was good.
- While the pump was out I took one of those blue shop towels, coated one side in wheel bearing grease, and 'swept' the bottom of the tank to pick up as many bits of foreign material I could see.
- Oh - and I got a replacement pump relay as well (an extra $14). Well worth it to prevent any more stranded issues.
Hope this helps anyone else experiencing the same issues.
Happy Saab'in!
