As Bill said, pressure readings are the first step in diagnosis. Get a manifold gauge set to read high and low side. Just measuring the low side will tell you if there's enough refrigerant, but seeing the relative difference between high and low under varying conditions allows you to diagnose a wider variety of problems. I had a hell of a time diagnosing my 9000 this past summer, because it ended up having two unrelated faults, but the good thing is I learned a lot about the system.
