Thanks Bill... turns out the switch in the driver's door lock was defective. The signal indicating door locked works OK (alarm ON), but there is no contact on the unlock signal (alarm OFF). For now I took off the door panel, jumpered the unlock signal, and kept the connector unplugged and all is good... but a new door handle switch is in order to get this to work again.
