Those two temp sensors are totally different.

The early single-wire one is a simple VDO temp sender that drives the gauge directly.
The late two-wire one is connected to the EDU - which drives the gauge via software, and also uses that info to control the radiator fan (your early radiator has a mechanical thermoswitch).

I don't off hand know the threads in question: my guess is the early is 1/8" NPT, and the late is 10mm with a sealing washer?

You should be able to get away with an adapter - it might kick the sensor out a little further, but that shouldn't mess with the reading much.
