You're starting to get into auto-body work. You can get a flexible body filler (similar to Bondo), and fill the cracks with that. Then sand with 160 grit pads using a dual-action sander (it spins and oscillates).

Next, sand with 400 to get aproximately smooth.

Then lightly go over the piece with a loose coat of contrasting paint color. This is your guide coat. It will tell you all the spots remaining that you have to fill in. Sand that down with 600 grit and soapy water until the only guidecoat paint you see is in the nicks and scratches.

Fill in the divits with the body filler, sand, then wet sand until smooth.

Spray with a self etching primer, wet sand with 600/800 grit.

Spray with color coat 2-4 times, then hit it with 2-3 coats of clear coat.
