A blown head gasket could potentially be pressurizing the coolant system causing some of the failures you've had. Check for contamination of the oil and coolant, and if you're seeing bubbles in the coolant reservoir once it's fully bled which would probably be your best indicator. The pressure could have just blown the coolant out the expansion reservoir cap hence no visible leak. You may have just had too much coolant in the system and once the car fully warmed up you start to blow some out the cap. It doesn't take much to make smelly, wet mess. I would try bringing it full up to temp again and seeing what happens.
