Fuel pump problem?

My wife called me this evening that her 98 CSE had started, run for about 50 yards and then died. Every time she tried to restart it, it would run very briefly then quit. I went over to her work parking lot where this happened and first tried changing the DI cassette, but that made no difference. It would still start, run for a second and then die.
It felt like a fuel pump problem, even though the whole fuel pump assembly was changed not that long ago. And in both cases where I have had a fuel pump go on me, there was no sign of life at all, unlike this time. I figured it might be a bad electrical connection at the pump so I opened the trunk floor and wiggled the wires to the pump. Then it started up perfectly and ran smoothly! Problem solved I thought and started to drive home. After about 20 minutes it cut out on the expressway (always fun) but only 2 miles from home. I tried messing with the wires again, reseating the connectors etc. but to no avail this time. I called AAA to tow me home. While I was sitting waiting I tried to start it one more time, and of course it started. I just sat there with it idling, for about 15 minutes until AAA showed up, since I didn't want to risk breaking down in the middle of the expressway again.
Any thoughts on what could cause this? I'm planning on pulling the fuel pump to see if I can see anything obvious, but is there anything else that could cause these symptoms?
