I agree the door handles/locks on our cars suck. I also have problems with all four of mine (though by some luck the drivers door is the best). I've had the rear door card off of my '87 without removing the seat. It was very fiddly. I can't recall if I took it all the way off o(which i think was the case) or just enough to manually open the door from the inside mechanism, but in any case it's definitely do-able.
