I researched doing exactly what you want to do, but ended up going with the DUAL XDMA 6540, which was selling for $159 on Crutchfield at time and can now be found on the web for just over $100. Couple nice features on this unit, is the color scheme is adjustable, so you can almost match the rest of the 9000 green dash lights. Bluetooth works great, although you can't download your phonebook. I did some splicing of wires, but I now am using this headunit with stock amp and speakers - the sound is great! Ipod functionality is terrible, but I mostly stream music over bluetooth, so that is not an issue for me.
