Thanks! As it turned out, the first rpelacement part I got wasn't the right one - the Saab docs on outside mirrors are kind of vague, I guess. So, when we took the wrong part back, the indy who originally got it for us was nice enough to do the job on the spot with the correct unit. You're right - the panel needs to come off to reach the electrical connectors.
Many years ago when I needed to replace the power door solenoid on my 9000T, I recall that I was advised NOT to try and remove the door panel (it was a rear door) due to the likelihood that I wouldn't be able to get it back on properly due to either the clips breaking, or lack of experience in fitting it. I ended up unfastening the door panel from the bottom, stuck a roll of paper towel in there to keep the panel away from the door frame, and reached in and swapped out the solenoid...
