While moving, we made many trips totaling 7000 miles towing a variety of loads, with only a vague idea of the total weight. The 10% rule seems good, although I came to consider a good hitch weight to be anything a 65 year old could lift without much difficulty. If the tongue was too heavy to lift onto the ball, it was too heavy for the car. Anything heavier caused the 9000 to noticeably sag which was not good. The heaviest items were loaded on the trailer, lighter stuff on the folded down rear seat, and the lightest in the trunk back of the rear axle. The heaviest loads including trailer must have been a ton more or less. The 9000 did not seem to mind this, except on the occasional fast sharp turn the trailer could be felt trying to push the back of the car sideways. Otherwise going into a strong head wind at interstate speeds, caused it run low levels of boost, until we backed off a bit. In the summer with A/C on, the hottest the engine and auto transmission would get was at 40 MPH or less going through towns. The temperatures were not a concern, although it would take a half hour at road speed for the tranny to cool below engine temperature. In general the 9000 is a good sturdy car, with the power and stability for towing a trailer.
