In my case, the car is either parked on the street or in a random garage when in NYC, so no one's adding gas. In NYC, I'd expect them to take some!
I'm guessing it's a combo of less rolling resistance in the tires (about down to wear bars), cooler air, less A/C use, and multiple trips at highway speeds to clean out the crap in the combustion chambers, injectors, etc. I know that when I did a 2500 mile trip in this car 3 years ago the mileage steadily improved. Averaged 29.5 on that trip, with lots of time around 80 mph, some full boost uphill runs in the Rockies and low speed traffic driving in some towns and in Monument Valley.
What is interesting is what the EDU tells me. In the 10 years I've had this car, I've noticed that the mileage shown in the EDU goes up if I drive 75-80 instead of 70-75. Doesn't make sense at all, but when I calculate it, I do get slightly better mileage running mostly 75-80 than at mostly 70-75. I know there are a lot of variables in this, but it's something I've noticed over the past 118K miles.
