Rust never sleeps Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Thu, 9 Jan 2014 04:24:01 In Reply to: Re: Was passed by a 9000 this morning!, Stephie [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 8 Jan 2014 18:11:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '97 CSE is Citron Beige as well. I've been keeping an eye out in the junkyards for a fender that color, but 9000 sightings even there have become rare. This spring I'll try patching up the fender as best I can.
As the saying goes, rust never sleeps.
The left front fender is the worst visible rust. Fortunately the floors are still intact. The rear end area is very crusty. The gas tank straps have needed replacement (one by me, the other by previous owner), and I had to wire-tie the fuel filter in place as the mount had rusted away. Recently I had to fix a rusted-out brake line. The hatch is rusty in places, but no major perforation yet. I've taken to spraying underneath with an oil coating before winter starts but a lot of the damage has already been done.
My '86 C900 is also suffering from the tinworm, fenders are getting badly perforated and I've patched the floor in a couple of places.
I can't complain as I paid very little for these cars, but at this point with these older Saabs if I were to get a nice one I'd sure keep it away from winter salt.
The stuff really is corrosive. When the 1949 Crosleys came out equipped with disc brakes, salting the roads was just coming into play and those brakes locked up tight as soon as the white stuff hit them! Also I'm not a "green" by any stretch of the imagination, but as you noted it can't be good pouring all of those tons of salt into the environment every year.
